VISIT A HISTORICAL SITE
The Montagu Bastion not only hosts some of Gibraltar's best art pieces but also has a rich history. Historians believe that it was built under the Moors and rebuilt and enlarged into a large five-sided bastion with three faces covering the Mole and Waterport, and two flanks. The site has had different uses since, including as a military store, and acting as an anti-aircraft position during the 20th Century. The Bastion’s original stone walls create a distinctive backdrop for the collection of art on display.GEMA has recently played host to a variety of events to include a five-act play, and fashion and dance workshops.
VIEW THE ART GALLERIES
The Gallery is divided into three main vaults, the first is dedicated to Gibraltarian artist Christian Hook. Christian was named Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 and has since seen plenty of success and acclaim. GEMA is privileged to be able to exhibit some of Christian’s earlier work which forms part of the Government’s collection, as well as some of his more recent prints. The Exhibition at GEMA also includes prior winners of the annual competitions organised by GCS on behalf of the Ministry of Culture in Gibraltar as well as The Kishin Alwani Foundation Collection.
