The Gibraltar Exhibitions of Modern Art, GEMA, is home to previous winners of local art competitions, and includes sculptures, installations, videos and photography. GEMA is housed within Montagu Bastion an interesting venue in its own right. It houses six works by internationally-acclaimed local artist Christian Hook who shot to fame after winning the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014.
VISIT A HISTORICAL SITE
The Montagu Bastion not only hosts some of Gibraltar's best art pieces but also has a rich history. Historians believe that it was built under the Moors and rebuilt and enlarged into a large five-sided bastion with three faces covering the Mole and the Waterport, and two flanks. The site since then has served many uses including holding various military weaponry throughout the years, acting as an anti-aircraft position during the 20th Century, and now hosting The Gibraltar Exhibitions of Modern Art.
