The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society proudly presents “A Celebration of Opera” at the Convent Ballroom on Wednesday 9 May at 7.30 pm. The concert is sponsored and organised on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.
Following huge successes over the past seasons with its opera concerts, the Society has decided to repeat the formula which proved so effective where two voices singing popular operatic arias are accompanied by a pianist.
Greek soprano Irini Kyriakidou continues to showcase her “sweet and virtuosic vocal talents” (The Observer) with opera companies and symphony orchestras throughout the United States and Europe. Ms. Kyriakidou studied at the Maria Callas Conservatory of Athens under Marina Krilovici and is the winner of the second prize in the “Maria Callas Grand Prix”, in Athens, first prize in the European Competition “Debut 2004” and the “Pro Europa” prize of the European Culture Foundation. Under the baton of Riccardo Muti, she performed as Cherinto in Demfoonte in her debuts with the Opéra national de Paris and the Ravenna Festival. A graduate of the International Opera Studio at Opernhaus Zürich, she performed as Pamina for the IOS production of Die Zauberflöte. Other roles include Sophie, in Rosenkavalier with the Tel Aviv Opera and Xenia in Boris Godunov with Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse. She has also sung at the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman, Smetana Hall in Prague and at the Theatre des Champs Elysée in Paris.
Rihards Macanovskis – bass, has been a soloist at the Latvian National Opera since 2003.
His achievements have been recognised with the “Latvijas Gāze” Annual Award for Opera 2012 as Best Opera Soloist. In 2013 he received the Pauls Sakss Award and was nominated for the Grand Music Award for his outstanding performance of Tchaikovsky’s romances.
The Artist received his musical education as part of Gurijs Antipovs class at the J. Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. He has worked with vocal coaches Margarita Gruzdeva and Hans Sotin. At the Latvian National Opera the singer has performed the roles of Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Colline (La bohème), Escamillo (Carmen), Fasolt (Das Rheingold), Leporello (Don Giovanni), the title role in Eugene Onegin, Wolfram von Eschenbach (Tannhäuser), Valentin and Wagner (Faust), The President (The Immured), Jakubowsky (The Rose of Turaida) a.o. Rihards Mačanovskis has collaborated with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra; performed concerts in Latvia, Moscow and Aix-en-Provence and participated in guest performances of the LNOB in Bergen (Norway), Dalhalla (Sweden), Bydgoszcz (Poland), Macau and Tallinn.
The two singers, accompanied by pianist Nauzet Medera, promise a most elegant spring concert in Gibraltar.
The programme includes arias by Bizet, Mozart, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky.
