The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society is privileged to welcome bassoonist Guilhaume Santana in a recital with pianist Pauline Berdat on Wednesday 7th March 2018 at 8:00pm at the Convent Ballroom. The concert is sponsored by Parasol Foundation.

Born in 1982 in Toulouse, Guilhaume Santana had violin and bassoon lessons at the local Conservatory of Music, and graduated on the violin before choosing to focus on the bassoon. The french-chilean musician studied with Prof.Dag Jensen at the Music University in Hannover/ Germany and was a member of the Berlin Karajan Academy. He was awarded the Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Prize in Berlin and the first prize at Wattrelos Competition for Young Soloists.

An encounter with the late Maestro Claudio Abbado during a tour of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra was a fundamental milestone for the young bassoonist: he followed the Maestro’s invitation to join his latest creations , the prestigious Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra Mozart in Italy, where he served for 10 years. Among others acclaimed recordings, a testimony of this collaboration with Claudio Abbado is published by the label Deutsche Grammophon, with the Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra KV 191.

He was appointed 2007 principal bassoon by the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, where he served for 10 years, under the baton of Maestro Karel Mark Chichon. As a guest principal bassoon he plays with major orchestras such as Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, where he collaborated regularly in the last 2 years, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, playing under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta…

 

Pianist Pauline Berdat studied at the Conservatory of Music in Strassburg, France. At the aged of 16 Pauline Berdat won a Gold Medal at the Piano and Chamber Music competition. She continued her education in Paris, working closely with Swedish pianist Inger Soedergren. She continued her studies at Hochschule fuer Musik in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, at Elza Kolodin´s class, where she passed her superior diploma.

As a passionate chamber musician (influenced by the pianists Hortense Cartier-Bresson and Grigory Gruzman, as well by the violoncellist Bernard Greenhouse) in 1991 she was awarded the first price at the International competition “Youth plays Mozart”, in duet with the violinist Igor Keller. In 1999 she was a semi finalist at the “Concorso internazionale di Musica da Camera Premio Vittorio Gui” in Florence, Italy, and finalist at the ”Johannes Brahms Wettbewerb in Poertschach am Woerthersee, Germany” (duet with the violinist Maryse Castello).

Pauline Berdat teaches piano accompaniment the Strassburg Conservatory and at the Academie Supérieure de Musique. She has been engaged in many chamber music projects and for over a decade she regularly participates at the symphonic activities of the Strassburg Philharmonic Orchester.

The programme will feature compositions for bassoon and piano by: W. Hurlstone, E. Elgar, J. Waterson, M. Ravel, G. Pierné, N. Rota and A. Piazzola
