Gibraltar Literature Week 2022

Author of 'The Ladies that Rock the Rock', an inspiring novella, featuring 22 incredible women from various walks of life who have made their impact on the Rock of Gibraltar. The ladies showcase the lessons they’ve learned on their journeys to success, in their own words. Interspersed throughout the book are little challenges and tasks for the readers to write their thoughts and help them in achieving their own goals. This is not just a book, but a self-development diary. Ayelet is co-founder of Benefit Business Solutions Ltd, Chairwoman of the Gibraltar- Israel Chamber of Commerce and author of ‘Relocation Darling, Relocation!’

Ayelet will be joined by GCS' Davina Barbara. 

A joint discussion on their work will explore common themes which run throughout. Giordano Durante is a poet who has published three collections since 2017 and Humbert Hernandez is a writer who has written numerous popular titles. At the session they will also be presenting and reading their poems in a wide-ranging conversation on memory and representations of the local in literature.

Robert Santos has put together a collection of photographs of Gibraltar’s changing landscape. The book has dedicated chapters focusing on the various districts across the Rock. Main Street an area which has been heavily photographed over the years and therefore provides a well-documented archive, features prominently. 

This popular read has raised £8,000 for Prostate Cancer Gibraltar, evidence of its popularity. Robert will be joined by Dr Darren Fa from the University of Gibraltar.

Academic writer, policy advisor and sustainability expert, Prof Daniella Tilbury, will discuss the future and our complex relationship with it. She reflects on how inspiration, and not fear, can move us to change our outlook and ways of living in Gibraltar. The focus is on how we can revitalize our cultural identities and protect what defines us whilst carving new ways forward. Interwoven into this dialogue will be an exploration of our Commonwealth connections and our future within it.

Although perhaps best known for their work at Gorham’s Cave and the Neanderthals, Stewart, Geraldine and Clive Finlayson have spent their lives exploring and uncovering the secrets of the ecology of the Iberian Peninsula and beyond, particularly its birds. Bird migration has been one of the topics which has fascinated them and which they have researched and written about extensively. Wildlife photography – and especially bird photography – has been a tool which they have used since well before the advent of digital cameras. In their latest book – Bird Migration between Europe and Africa, just published – they explore the beauty and fragility of the world of migratory birds, and the importance of Gibraltar to them.

Manolo Galliano and Victor Hermida have again joined forces to produce a book that looks into the history, origin and location of the streets, roads, lanes and ramps of the City of Gibraltar. The book, which includes maps and photographs, is titled 'A Rocky Labyrinth' and is due out in November.’

Jackie Anderson and Rebecca Calderon come together in what promises to be an interesting discussion focusing on their writing and author journeys. Between them both they have published numerous works, articles and books and will offer an insight into their inspiration and how they navigated the road to publishing. They will discuss women's voices and how these are sometimes perceived in the world of literature and their current works in progress. Their session will appeal to would be writers, as they hope to inspire with their knowledge and experience referring to their writing which includes poetry, short stories, features, opinion pieces, non-fiction and more.

Giselle’s debut novel PANDORA'S BOX won the Romantic Novelists' Association New Writer's Award and her 6th novel, DEAR DAD was shortlisted for the RNA Romantic Novel of the Year.

Richard Garcia's latest research has been into the life of John Mackintosh, described by the author as Gibraltar's greatest benefactor and philanthropist. His financial contributions resulting in Mount Alvernia, the Jewish Home, the John Mackintosh Hall, the Mackintosh wing at the former St Bernard's Hospital, Mackintosh scholarships to study in the UK, etc. However, the life of John Mackintosh himself and of his wife, Victoria, has always been cloaked in mystery. The research has resulted in a new illustrated book, which is around 375 pages in length and will be published by the trustees of the John Mackintosh Trust later this year. It is the first detailed account of John Mackintosh, his parents, his sisters, his wife and family, and his wide business interests. In the meantime, Richard Garcia will be giving a preview in the form of an illustrated talk of what to expect in the book, which is full of surprises.

New this year, Gibraltar Literature Week presents a selection of speakers that will inspire, engage and enthral in ten-minute lightning sessions. Their talks promise to be entertaining and fun and shed a spotlight on some curious literary journeys. You will learn all about an international writer and illustrator’s residency held on the Rock, the experiences of a young writer as he completes his first novella, writing for the stage and becoming an established author on amazon.
