The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society feels very privileged that internationally awarded guitarist José María Gallardo Del Rey and conductor Juan Cantarell together with the European Symphony Orchestra will open the Philharmonic Society’s 20th Anniversary season with such a magnificent programme. National Celebrations Classical concert will take place at St Michael’s Cave on Thursday 6 September 2018 at 8.00 pm. The concert is sponsored and organised on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.
ALONSO ESPARTERO GALISTEOJosé María Gallardo del Rey made his debut in Seville at the age of nine and since then has been garnering the greatest hits from audiences and critics around the world.
His training as a classical guitarist has been enriched by his intense relationship with the world of Flamenco. The combination of both styles has created a unique way to interpret and understand Spanish music. It is for this reason that his presence becomes essential in projects like “Pasión Española”, with Plácido Domingo (Latin Grammy 2008), “Habanera Gipsy”, with Elina Garança (2010), “Caprichos Líricos”, with Teresa Berganza (1996) or his work as director and artistic adviser of Paco de Lucía in his debut with the Concierto de Aranjuez (Japan 1990). As an Artist of Deutsche Grammophon, José María Gallardo del Rey has edited “The Trees Speak”, “14 Maneras De Echarte De Menos” and his album with La Maestranza, “My Spain”, reaping the greatest hits of critic and public.
Juan Cantarell was born in Barcelona where he studied piano at the Academia New ImageMarshall with Alicia de Larrocha and Mercè Roldós. He studied conducting at the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna with Karl Österreicher and Julius Kalmar and at the same time he continued the studies of piano with Carmen Graf-Adnet and Hans Graf. He made his debut at the Musikverein of Vienna directing the Pro-Arte Orchester Wien. He completed his Postgraduate conducting studies at the Royal Academy of Music (London) with Sir Colin Davis, Colin Metters and George Hurst, obtaining the Diploma of Advanced Studies. In 2015 he has been appointed Musical Assistant to Maestro Karel Mark Chichon at the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken where he has been invited as a guest conductor for the 2019/2020 Season. In 2015 he has started his collaboration with the Philharmonic Orchestra Mijail Jora-Bacau (Romania) where he has conducted Puccini’s Madama Butterfly,Tosca and several symphonic concerts. Juan Cantarell is to be appointed as the next Permanent Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra Mijail Jora-Bacau.
