The National Celebration Concert featuring Alisa Weilerstein

The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society feels very privileged that Alisa Weilerstein, without doubt one, if not the most sought-after cellist in the world and her partner, conductor Rafael Payare together with the European Symphony Orchestra will open the 2016/2017 Philharmonic Society’s season with such a magnificent programme. National Celebrations Classical concert will take place at St Michael’s Cave on Tuesday 6 September 2016 at 8.00 pm. The concert is sponsored and organised on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.

“A young cellist whose emotionally resonant performances of both traditional and contemporary music have earned her international recognition, … Weilerstein is a consummate performer, combining technical precision with impassioned musicianship.” So stated the MacArthur Foundation when awarding Alisa Weilerstein a 2011 MacArthur “genius grant” Fellowship. As an exclusive Decca Classics recording artist Weilerstein’s discography includes Dvorák’s cello concerto; Solo, her compilation of unaccompanied 20th-century cello music and Elgar and Elliot carter’s cello concertos with Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin, which was named BBC Music’s “Recording of the Year 2013”

Rafael Payare has been Chief Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra since September 2014 and was recently appointed Principal Conductor of the Castleton Festival in Virginia, taking over from the late Lorin Maazel.

Developing into one of the most sought after young conductors, Payare has made recent debuts with the Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, London Symphony and the Chicago Symphony at the Ravinia Festival. Other highlights have included the City of Birmingham Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony and the Los Angeles and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic orchestras. 2014-15 also saw his acclaimed opera debut conducting Madame Butterfly at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. He has enjoyed collaborations with soloists including Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Nikolai Lugansky, Alisa Weilerstein, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Sergey Khachatryan, Jonathan Biss and Alexander Melnikov.

The programme:

L. van Beethoven: Symphony No 3, Op 55 “Eroica”

E. Elgar: Cello Concerto Op 85 (Alisa Weilerstein, cello)
